After beating every record in Steam’s history, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is now setting new and unprecedented records.
PUBG only recently beaten Dota 2’s concurrent player record of 1.2 million. This seems like such a long time ago, now that the game is closing in on 2 million concurrent players.
Over the weekend, the game reached the new peak concurrent number on Steam of 1,984,278 players. This is unheard of on Valve’s service, and it dwarfs every other game we previously thought to be untouchable juggernauts.
Steam’s peak concurrent players is just above 16 million. With a little bit of math, you will realise that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds amounts to about 12% of that number. That’s a colossal share for any game, let alone an Early Access one that only came out in March.
Battlegrounds’ developer, Bluehole, even created a new subsidiary specifically to manage the game. What’s even more curious about this success is that it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
Many games start out strong and taper off in the weeks and months to follow. Not PUBG, though, which has been exploding in popularly as time went on.
